This type of swimwear was created in the 1950s for surfing. In more recent years, they have become a popular style of swim shorts. The name “boardshorts” comes from their use in water sports using a board, such as surfing.

Your body shape can influence your choice of size. We always recommend trying on swimwear before purchase. Fasten your shorts and gradually pull them downwards. If they are easy to pull down, it means they are too big and you could be in for a few surprises once you’re in the water surrounded by waves!

Shorter cuts (between 14” and 17”) give you freedom of movement and allow you to do a wide range of water sports, including surfing (for occasional sessions of less than 1 hour). Longer cuts (between 17” and 20”) reduce irritation from the board or wax on the thighs, and at the top of the knees when paddling. These cuts are therefore better suited to regular or even intensive surfing.
When surfing, whether it’s due to duck diving or a wipeout, it’s not easy to retrieve and reposition boardshorts that have fallen down while paddling at the same time... Choosing the right waistband for surfing becomes essential in this case. Go for an elasticated or semi-elasticated waistband with a drawstring that goes all the way round the waist.
